Coquihalla Hwy. reopened between Hope, Merritt after ‘vehicle incident’

Southbound lanes on the Coquihalla Highway reopened Friday morning after treacherous conditions forced a seven-hour closure.

Part of the snowy Coquihalla Highway has been closed as crews respond to a “vehicle incident” Thursday afternoon, according to DriveBC.

The trouble was reported around 3:30 p.m. between Hope and Merritt, where an assessment of the busy route remained underway hours later.

An image shared with CTV News shows multiple trucks in the ditch at the Coquihalla Summit. It’s unclear whether anyone was hurt.

The collisions came hours after another series of “vehicle incidents” closed the highway in both directions, according to DriveBC.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said a low-pressure system dumped heavy snow onto the Coquihalla this week, creating challenging driving conditions.

The road was reopened Friday morning after a closure that lasted several hours.
