13-year-old girl seriously injured after being hit by a truck in Maple Ridge, RCMP say

A 13-year-old girl was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a pickup truck in Maple Ridge Monday morning.

In a news release, Ridge Meadows RCMP said the incident unfolded in the 10200 block of 242B Street at approximately 8 a.m.

The driver of the pickup was travelling eastbound on 102 Avenue when he struck the teen while she was crossing northbound at a marked crosswalk.

RCMP say the driver remained on scene, and that their investigation is looking into a number of factors, including weather and road conditions at the time.

“Drivers and pedestrians are once again reminded to take extra precautions on our roadways, especially during this wet weather and during darker periods of the day when there is even less visibility,” Ridge Meadows RCMP Insp. Martin Guay said in the release.

“Drivers need to drive relative to current conditions and pay extra attention in areas where there may be increased foot traffic. Pedestrians are reminded to dress to be seen and make eye contact with drivers before safely entering the roadway,” he added.

Roads in the area were closed for some time, but have since reopened.
