Food safety warning issued after reports of tampered baby formula in GTA

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a food safety warning after some bottles of baby formula were found with broken seals and blue tape applied on the tampered lid in Wal-Mart stores in the GTA.

The CFIA said they received three separate complaints from shoppers in Brampton and Mississauga regarding bottles of "Enfamil A+ Ready-to-Feed Infant Formula" that were found with the tamper-proof seal broken and blue tape applied in its place.

Officials say the bottles were also found to contain water and "some formula residue" instead of infant formula.

CFIA said Wal-Mart did not find any additional product that had been altered and has removed the infant formula from a number of its stores in the Halton and Peel regions.

There have been no confirmed illnesses in connection with the baby formula.

CFIA has warned customers using infant formula to examine the bottle before purchase to ensure the security seal is still intact. Products that appear to have been altered should not be consumed and should be thrown out or returned to the store where it was purchased.

The CFIA is investigating the incident and said it is working closely with Wal-Mart Canada to determine how the tampering occurred.
