The Toronto Blue Jays are about to begin their 50th season, a milestone that has fans across Canada reflecting on the earliest days of baseball in Toronto.

The anniversary season comes after one of the most memorable years in recent team history.

Last fall, the Blue Jays came within a win of a championship before falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series — a dramatic run that reignited enthusiasm for the club across the country.

Now, as the team prepares to open its 2026 home schedule on March 27 at Rogers Centre, the Blue Jays say they will hold a special on-field ceremony before the game to honour the club’s 2025 American League championship.

Throughout the season, players will also wear a commemorative 50th-season retro patch on their uniforms.

From expansion, to one of Canada’s favourite teams

When the Blue Jays debuted in 1977, they took on the Chicago White Sox on a snowy, yet brisk, April afternoon at Exhibition Stadium.

For many fans, those early seasons came with a sense of novelty — a brand-new team representing Canada in a league dominated heavily by United States.

In previous coverage, CTV News has highlighted fans across the country who reflected on earlier times of heartbreak, celebration and nostalgic memories of what this club has meant to them.

Some remember watching early broadcasts at home, listening on the radio, or collecting memorabilia that has now become part of family history.
