Mounties in B.C. have released video showing a driver behind the wheel of his dad’s Cadillac going 85 km/h over the limit, along with a warning about the consequences of excessive speeding. The RCMP’s Air 1 helicopter spotted the vehicle on Highway 1 in Metro Vancouver one morning last week, clocked its speed at 175 km/h, and immediately notified the B.C. Highway Patrol, according to a statement from police. “Oh, he’s cooking,” the helicopter pilot can be heard saying in the video, referring to the high rate of speed the vehicle is travelling at while repeatedly changing lanes. The SUV was ultimately pulled over by an officer who learned that the 18-year-old driver had a novice licence, was using his dad’s vehicle, and had also been pulled over a month earlier for excessive speeding—resulting in a seven-day impound, according to authorities. “Weaving through traffic while more than 80 km/h over the limit is unacceptably dangerous. We want every driver to see this video and understand that we’re using every tool at our disposal, including helicopters a thousand metres above your head, to keep our roads safer,” said B.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson Sgt. Michael McLaughlin, in a statement. The driver was fined $368, will have to pay increased insurance premiums, and risks losing his licence, the B.C. Highway Patrol’s statement said, adding that the Cadillac’s owner will have to foot the bill for the cost of a tow and another seven-day impound. “Just because you can’t see the police doesn’t mean that we’re not there,” McLaughlin’s statement continued. “Next time you see a helicopter overhead, consider slowing down.”
