Sask. towing company warns drivers to be cautious on ice

A Lumsden area towing business recently rescued a truck trapped in the ice on Lake Diefenbaker.

A Saskatchewan towing company is reminding residents to be cautious on the ice.

TRK Towing posted to social media about two separate incidents on Diefenbaker Lake, where a vehicle had gone under the ice - one in late Feb. and one last week.

The company says while the ice may look good on top, it doesn’t mean it’s good on the bottom.

TRK Towing says in both cases, the ice where the vehicles went under was compromised by an underwater stream.

A spokesperson says the number of cases of vehicles or ice fishing shacks going under depends on the year and weather conditions, but they expect there will be more recoveries to do in the coming weeks, and are warning people to be careful.

The Water Security Agency recommends ice be at least four inches thick for a person walking on it. Ice thickness guidelines can be found at wsask.ca
