‘It could inspire students’: Saskatoon students showcase innovation at regional science fair

Young innovators from across the region are gathering in Saskatoon to display their science projects at this year’s regional fair. Carla Shynkaruk reports.

Students in Saskatoon are putting their science skills to the test this week as the Saskatoon Regional Science Fair 2026 brings together young innovators from across the region.

But organizers say the event is about more than just experiments— it’s a chance to spark future careers.

Jack Jeffery is a first-time participant whose project is one of nearly 20 on display from students across Saskatoon and surrounding communities.

“It could inspire students to be chemists in the future,” he said.

Inside the gym at Caswell Community School, tri-fold boards and experiments may look simple at first glance. But behind them is hands-on STEM learning— science, technology, engineering and math— in action.

Students in grades six through 12 took part in the annual regional fair, presenting projects that range from environmental studies to engineering design. Entries are judged on creativity, scientific method, and real-world impact.

“It makes you look further at what you see every single day and connect that back to science and STEM, which I think is so interesting,” Grade 9 participant Ellen Qin told CTV News.

For many students, the event is also a friendly competition.

“It’s kind of a competition to see who has the best project. It’s cool to see everyone’s project,” said Jeffery.

Event co-chair Kelsey Knoblauch says she has seen projects evolve over her 12 years of involvement. When she started, they focused more on microplastics, cancer research and water systems.

“As time has gone by, it’s become a lot more tech-related—more robotics, AI, machine learning, even mapping DNA,” she said.

The fair also featured representatives from business and university communities, giving students a glimpse into future career paths.

More experienced participants, like Qin, are already developing practical solutions. Her project focuses on an early detection system for hypothermia and heat strain.

“I think people are really surprised because it can definitely be applied in day-to-day life. So it’s very practical,” she said.

Top projects from the regional fair will advance to a Canada-wide competition in May, where students can compete for scholarships and cash prizes.

As for how they’ll do, students remain cautiously optimistic.

“I think I’m going to do okay… maybe make the next round,” Jeffery said.

“There are so many good projects here, so I’m just hoping for the best,” Qin said.

For her, the experience is already shaping future ambitions, with a career in the field of medicine firmly in sight.
