A 58-year-old woman from Sudbury, Ont. died Wednesday at the Grand Valley Institution for Women. Monique Frank was serving a sentence of three years, three months and 11 days at the Kitchener, Ont. prison. Her death was confirmed by Correctional Service Canada. Ontario Provincial Police arrested Frank on Oct. 5, 2023 during a RIDE check in Espanola. “A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of over 870 grams of suspected fentanyl and over 95 grams of suspected cocaine,” they wrote in a press release at the time. “The estimated street value of the drugs seized is approximately $364,000.” Frank was charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of an opioid for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. A 51-year-old man from Elliott Lake was also charged during that traffic stop. Correctional Service Canada said Frank died from “apparent natural causes.”
