‘Help and services they need’: Prince Albert hygiene hub returns

The local mobile hygiene hub has once again hit the streets of Prince Albert.

CTV News spoke with the operating team at the hub on the corner of Central Ave. and 15th St. E.

“We have a simple draw, like a bathroom that brings people in, and then just some friendly staff that can point them in the right direction,” explained Community Safety and Wellbeing Coordinator Jim Woodcock.

“It’s just it’s one more chance for people to get help and services that they need.”

The city says the hub has seen about 30 users daily since it opened two weeks ago. It consists of a trailer with two washrooms, a sink and a tent, as well as staff that can help refer clients to social supports.

Prince Albert Metis Women’s Association (PAMWA) Street Outreach Worker Blake Felts says there are many repeat visitors.

“Every day we see just about the same people,” said Felts.

“I see some new faces now and then, but it’s generally the same people every day.”

The weekday service is operated by outreach workers through a partnership with PAMWA. One service offered helps clients get official IDs.

The city expects the numbers to climb over the next few months, as the hub was hosting more than 50 clients daily last fall.

“We just make sure, you know, people need references to different services, and make sure to get them those services,” explained Felts.

“We give them drinks and sandwiches. We make sure they’re doing well mentally and physically.”

Woodcock tells CTV News the city purchased the hub through a federal grant.

“Traditionally social services, you know, come from the provincial and federal level,” said Woodcock.

“But sometimes municipalities have kind of a unique view at the local level to be able to provide services that are open to the community.”

The hygiene hub runs daily from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
