Chilly temperatures expected for latter half of holiday season in Saskatoon

Saskatoon and surrounding areas have seen a significant amount of snow, followed by some extremely chilly temperatures over the weekend.

The City of Saskatoon declared a snow event on Saturday evening at 11 p.m., reporting 13 centimetres of snow in some parts of the city.

“We’re going to be seeing a clearing trend for the morning, as you kind of get this Arctic push of cold air coming along with it....it’s not going to get much of a warm-up during the day,” Brian Luzny, a meteorologist for Environment Canada, said.

According to Environment Canada, Saskatoon saw a low of -32 C on Sunday morning. While Environment Canada only issues cold warnings for temperatures below -40 C with wind chill, Luzny is still advising anyone who will be spending time outside to take precautions.

“Just make sure you bundle up. Lots of layers and try to limit your exposed skin to the outside too because there is that risk of frostbite,” Luzny said.

The meteorologist added that the temperature is expected to warm up on Sunday night into Monday. This will likely provide residents with some relief before some more frigid temperatures make their way into the city just in time for New Year’s Eve later in the week.

“You’re going to get a few days of above normal temperatures, like Monday and Tuesday, before another system kind of pushes in on...Tuesday night into Wednesday. And that’s also going to bring a few centimetres of snow and then usher colder air back into Thursday and Friday,” Lunzy said.

Lunzy offered some additional advice for those who might be hitting the roads soon.

“Continue to pay attention to watches and warnings, and even areas surrounding Saskatoon because of holidays and people like to travel. So beware of the highway conditions and any watches and warnings that may be going on around Saskatchewan as well,” Lunzy said.
