Weyburn RCMP to close off Highway 39 as part of shooting investigation

The stretch of highway near Weyburn where a woman was shot early this month will be closed for an investigation Wednesday evening.

The Saskatchewan RCMP say a section of Highway 39 near Weyburn will be closed during the afternoon and evening of Sept. 24 as part of the ongoing probe into a suspicious death in the area on Sept. 12.

The closure will affect Highway 39 northwest of Weyburn from Range Road 210 and Range Road 2153 – and will remain in effect from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

Investigators will be on the scene during that time. Traffic in the area will be rerouted.

“Please slow down as you approach the area and abide by signage/instruction provided. Motorists can expect delays in the area; we thank you for your patience,” a statement from RCMP read.

Social media misinformation

Saskatchewan RCMP say its officers were made aware of a social media post that included misinformation regarding shootings on highways near Weyburn.

“This information is not accurate, and the Weyburn RCMP has not received any reports of this nature,” the statement read. “We encourage the public to stop sharing the incorrect social media post to eliminate rumours and misinformation.”

According to the service, there has been no other firearms-related incidents reported in the Weyburn detachment area – except for a single gunshot that was heard during the evening of Sunday, Sept. 21.

Officers responded to the incident and did not find any injured residents, or evidence of a suspicious firearm discharge.

RCMP went onto say that there have been no other events that are considered connected to the fatal shooting on Sept. 12.

On the night of Sept. 12, two vehicles on Highway 39 were struck by gunfire approximately three kilometres northwest of Weyburn.

Tanya Myers, 44, was riding as a passenger in one of the vehicles. She was hit by one of the shots and succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

The investigation into Myers death continues.

Since the incident was made public on Saturday, Sept. 13, RCMP have asked for the public’s assistance in identifying potential witnesses of the shooting. The drivers of at least two vehicles who were travelling through the area at the time of the shooting have been identified after calls for public assistance.

On Sept. 17, RCMP shared a statement from Myers’ family, asking for whoever is responsible to come forward.

“She did not have anything to do with the way she left us,” the family’s statement read.

”To the person or persons responsible, please grow a conscience and take responsibility for your actions. Tanya deserves justice, and her family deserves answers.”
