The Town of White City reported Friday that it successfully recovered the majority of funds targeted in a fraud scheme in July. On July 29, 2025, a fraudster impersonated the WCRM 158 Wastewater Authority, which is jointly owned by the Town of White City and the Rural Municipality of Edenwold. The initial loss for the Town of White City was $200,000 but through its Cyber Insurance Policy, the Town successfully recovered $195,073.05 for a total net impact of approximately $5,000. According to the Town, the incident was isolated and there was no breach of its internal security systems. The Town’s IT provider has reviewed and verified the internal security system. Friday’s announcement also stated that no personal information belonging to ratepayers was compromised. The Town notified the RCMP and continues to cooperate with the ongoing criminal investigation. The RM of Edenwold was also able to recover the majority of funds lost to the fraud scheme.
