Sentencing continues for Misha Pavelick’s killer, judge expected to rule on time served

Justice Catherine Dawson is expected to make a decision Tuesday afternoon on the amount of time the man found guilty of killing Misha Pavelick is to serve.

Pavelick was 19-years-old when he was fatally stabbed at a graduation party at the Kinookimaw Campground near Regina Beach on May 21, 2006.

The man, now 37-years-old, was 17 at the time of Pavelick’s killing and can still not be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

On Monday, Dawson revealed the man will receive a youth sentence for second-degree murder. The decision comes after the Crown petitioned to have the man sentenced as an adult, following the three-week trial where a 12-member jury found the man guilty last November.

The youth sentence consists of four years in prison along with three years of supervision compared to the adult sentence that holds a penalty of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years for adults.

The convicted man has been in police custody since October 2024. In court, Crown prosecutor Adam Breker argued the man should not be credited for his time served.

However, defence lawyer Andrew Hitchcock disputed he should.

Dawson is expected to provide the man’s full sentence Tuesday afternoon at Court of King’s Bench in Regina.
