Local actors take part in talent showcase in Regina

Several stars of tomorrow showcased their talent for industry leaders in Regina. Wayne Mantyka reports.

The resurgence of Saskatchewan’s film industry is creating opportunities for aspiring actors in the province. Over the weekend, several stars of tomorrow showcased their talent for industry leaders.

It was an evening for Saskatchewan actors to be discovered.

“Message tonight is anyone can do it. I mean we have people tonight that have started out just a few months ago. We’ve had people that have been in the industry for over 15 years,” actor Bailey Bourget told CTV News.

Actors hoping to land roles in future films performed before an audience that included film producers seeking talent.

“Through auditions you also discover new people,” director Lucas Frison explained. “I know that we had a few people that really surprised me and I’ve never heard of this person or seen this person and then they’re perfect for the role.”

The actors have been developing their skills through classes and coaching at Regina’s Bar S Studios.

“There are a ton of talented people here and people don’t need to move to Toronto or Vancouver. They can start a career right here,” director Style Dayne with Bar S Studios explained. “We always say that a career in Saskatchewan film and television is not just possible, it’s probable.”

Among those assessing the talent was veteran Regina film producer Kevin Dewalt with Minds Eye Entertainment.

“You need good actors to make good movies and events like this is an opportunity to see the kind of young talent and hopefully there will be some stars that come out of it,” he said.

The return of government incentives is driving demand for homegrown talent. These actors hope to be among the stars who play a role in rebuilding Saskatchewan’s film industry.
