The new interim leader of the Saskatchewan New Democrats says she's honoured to be the first woman to head the party.

Regina MLA Nicole Sarauer replaces Trent Wotherspoon, who stepped down to consider running for the job permanently.

Sarauer says she hopes she's just one in a line of many women who will follow in politics.

Sarauer also becomes leader of the official Opposition and Premier Brad Wall says he's looking forward to debating with her in the legislature.

Wall says Sarauer has been impressive in the assembly since being elected in April 2016.

Sarauer says she wants to talk about issues that matter to Saskatchewan residents.

"I bring a slightly different style than maybe leaders we've had in the past, but still a style that's strong," she said Wednesday. "I'm looking forward to having that opportunity to ask him the important questions that we're hearing across the province that people are wanting answered."

Sarauer has served as deputy house leader for the Opposition and has served as critic for several portfolios, including justice, policing and corrections, status of women, the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority and immigration.

Before being elected, Sarauer practised law at a private firm until 2011 when she moved to a provincial charity providing free legal representation.

She was also an elected trustee on the Regina Catholic School Board.

"It's very exciting to be taking over this interim role. It's an incredibly important role and I hope that ... me being in this space now inspires other women to consider this as well."

The NDP was left without a leader after the April 2016 provincial election when Cam Broten lost his seat and stepped down.

The party is to choose its new leader at a convention next May.

So far, only Saskatoon Meewasin MLA Dr. Ryan Meili, who was elected in a byelection this spring, has said he will seek the top job.

Wotherspoon, who took on the interim role after Broten stepped down, initially said he wouldn't pursue the leadership because he didn't want to lose time with his young family.

However, the three-term Regina MLA said last week that he's in a different place now and is reconsidering.

Sarauer sees herself as a referee over the candidates.

"My job is to ensure that space is created for all leadership candidates, whoever they are within and without caucus, to be able to reach out to the community, to share ideas and to push the party forward."
