Funnel clouds possible amid high winds in west central Sask.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is warning of the possibility of funnel clouds forming across much of western Saskatchewan today.

Just after 12 p.m. Wednesday, the national weather service issued a special weather statement covering an area extending from Onion Lake in the northwest to Regway in the south.

Saskatoon, Swift Current and Moose Jaw are among the major communities included in the statement.

Any funnel cloud activity is expected to develop Wednesday afternoon in southern Saskatchewan and will diminish in the evening.

Some of the funnel clouds have the ability to become weak landspout tornadoes, according to ECCC.

“Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous,” the statement read.

“They can be strong enough to topple trees, damage roofs or toss debris short distances.”
