Blowing snow, cold advisories in place for much of Saskatchewan

Extreme cold will begin Wednesday night and last up until the weekend. Sabeen Ahmad has your full forecast.

An orange level cold warning has been issued for much of Saskatchewan on Wednesday, including Regina and Saskatoon.

Just before 4 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said a multi-day episode of very cold wind chills is expected, with some areas expected to reach -40 C to -45 C.

The cold episode is expected to begin on Wednesday overnight and will last at least three days. The weather agency says the wind chill values may improve slightly during daytime hours but are expected to drop below -40 C each night.

Several other areas are under a yellow level cold warning, with windchills also expected to drop from -45 C to -50 C. The cold will moderate slightly by Thursday afternoon in those areas, according to ECCC.

Blowing snow advisories are also in place for parts of southeast Saskatchewan, with poor visibility expected.

ECCC says to dress warmly if heading outside, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with the wind chill.

People are also advised to keep emergency supplies in their vehicle, such as extra blankets and jumper cables.
