Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Justice is providing more details surrounding an incident earlier this week that saw Regina police shoot and injure a man. Police responded to a call early Tuesday morning from a youth, who claimed an intoxicated man was firing a crossbow inside a home and punching holes in a wall. That call came around 2:11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7 and police arrived at the home in the 800 block of Elphinstone just minutes later, according to an update from the Ministry of Justice on Thursday. When officers entered the home at around 2:20 a.m., the ministry says a confrontation occurred between them and the 35-year-old man who was the subject of the call. “During the confrontation, members issued verbal commands and two members of RPS discharged their service pistols, striking the man,” the update read. Officers at the scene then provided first aid to the man and contacted EMS who arrived at about 2:25 a.m. The update added that he was taken to a Regina hospital where he remains in stable condition. The province’s police oversight organization, the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), was notified of the incident around 3:06 a.m. SIRT is the civilian-led unit responsible for investigating serious incidents involving police, including in-custody deaths or serious injuries. SIRT will assume responsibility for investigating the conduct of the officers in question during the incident as well as the circumstances surrounding his arrest. RPS maintains responsibility for investigating the original complaint as well as the man in question’s actions during the incident. The crossbow allegedly used by the 35-year-old was recovered from the scene and will be examined in both investigations. The ministry says a final report of the investigation will be released to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.
