A 47-year-old woman is facing multiple charges in connection with a house fire that left a 51-year-old woman dead in Ottawa’s west end last October, according to the Ottawa Police Service. Naveen Alkhalil has been charged with first-degree murder, arson with disregard for human life, arson causing bodily harm, arson causing property damage and possession of incendiary material for arson. On Oct. 8, 2024, firefighters responded to a call just after 3:30 a.m., reporting a fire coming from the window of a one-storey bungalow on Rossland Avenue. The fire had spread to the roof of the home. A man and a woman were treated for serious burns and smoke inhalation and transported to hospital in serious condition. The woman, Ottokie Kelly, died in hospital more than a month later. Police considered her death a homicide. In January, police announced a 30-year-old man had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. Ahmed Hozayen was charged with first-degree murder and several arson-related offences.
