The City of Saskatoon has raised a flag to honour residential school survivors ahead of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Survivors’ Flag Raising event was held Friday in Civic Square. The event featured speeches from community leaders and residential school survivors, as well as dancing, drumming and singing. In a news release, the city says “the flag was created to honour survivors and commemorate those whose lives and communities were impacted by Canada’s residential school system.” It adds the design of the flag reflects contributions of survivors from across Canada, including three from Saskatchewan who helped select the flag’s symbolic elements. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, takes place Wednesday, Sept. 30. A national commemorative gathering will be held at Parliament Hill, with the Peace Tower and Senate Building lit orange during the evening.
