What’s playing this weekend: May 29-31

From family comedy to tense psychological horror, Rosie and "Mr. Hollywood" break down the latest titles hitting theaters and streaming services this Friday.

Film reviewer Matt Demers, A.K.A. Mr. Hollywood, says there’s something for everyone playing in theatres this weekend.

Demers joined CTV’s Your Morning Ottawa on Friday to talk about three new releases, including a family-friendly comedy, a hypnotic new horror film and a Second World War thriller.

The Breadwinner (Rated PG)

This new comedy film about a struggling stay-at-home dad is “absolutely on brand” for writer and star Nate Bargatze, Demers said.

“He’s the comedian at the helm, so if you know his humour, his stand-up, it’s all about that family life,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“It’s gentle, it’s inoffensive, it’s something you can bring the whole family to. A bit of a throwback. Yeah, I just had a good time. So, if you are a fan of his humour, well, you’re just going to eat this up.”

The film stars Bargatze, Mandy Moore and Colin Jost. “The Breadwinner” was directed by Eric Appel.

Backrooms (Rated R)

This horror flick from 20-year-old co-writer and director Kane Parsons is based on Parsons’s viral web series, and Mr. Hollywood called it a “dizzying, hypnotic experience.”

“This movie goes in so many different directions and I love it,” Demers said.

“Gives you so much to chew on. Yeah, you see this guy he’s working at this furniture store that he owns, and he finds this backroom, and the things he sees, boy oh boy.”

“Backrooms” stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve and Mark Duplass.

Pressure (Rated PG-13)

This tense Second World War thriller follows the decision-makers in the days before D-Day, and Mr. Hollywood says it will keep you on the edge of your seat.

“This is gripping, logistics-packed, behind the scenes wartime thriller,” Mr. Hollywood said.

“It’s all based on the weather forecast leading into that big day. Are they going to do it? Can they do it?”

The film was co-written and directed by Anthony Maras and stars Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and Kerry Condon.
