What’s open and closed in Ottawa over New Year’s

CTVNewsOttawa.ca looks at what’s open and closed in Ottawa over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season.

OC Transpo

Here is a look at the OC Transpo schedule over the holiday season.

• Dec. 29, Dec. 30 and Jan. 2: OC Transpo buses will operate on a reduced weekday schedule. O-Train Line 1 will operate on a reduced weekday schedule with peak period service every six minutes. O-Train Lines 2 and 4 will operate on a normal weekday schedule.
• Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve): Bus service will operate on a reduced weekday schedule with additional resources available to supplement busy routes as required. O-Train Line 1 will operate on a reduced Friday schedule from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., with peak period service every six minutes. O-Train Line 2 will operate on an extended schedule from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Line 4 will operate on a normal weekday schedule.
• New Year’s Day: OC Transpo bus service and O-Train Lines 1, 2 and 4 will operate on a Sunday schedule.
• Para Transpo will operate on a holiday service on Christmas, Boxing and New Year’s days. Customers may book trips for these days by using My Para Transpo or by calling 613-560-5000 up to seven days in advance.

OC Transpo service will be free after 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Free transit will be available on the O-Train, buses and Para Transpo, courtesy of Safer Roads Ottawa and MADD Ottawa and Area. Para Transpo will operate until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Green bin, recycling, garbage collection

The City of Ottawa says there will be no curbside or multi-residential green bin, recycling, garbage or bulky item collection on New Year’s Day.

“The pick-up will take place on the following day. In addition, the collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week,” the city said.

The Trail Waste Facility will be closed on New Year’s Day.

The city says Christmas trees will be picked up on your regular collection day.

Client Service Centres

• Ottawa’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters only on Jan. 1.
• The Service Ottawa Client Services Centres at Ottawa City Hall, Ben Franklin Place, 580 Terry Fox Drive in Kanata, and 255 Centrum Boulevard in Orléans will be closed on New Year’s Day.
• The Provincial Offences Court will be closed on Jan. 1.
• The Metcalfe, West Carleton, and North Gower Client Service Centres will be closed until Friday, Jan. 2.
• The Business Licensing Centre at 735 Industrial Avenue will be closed on New Year’s Day.

City of Ottawa services

• All municipal child care centres will be closed on New Year’s Day.
• Ottawa Public Library Branches will be closed on Jan. 1. All branches will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31.
• City of Ottawa pools, arenas and fitness centres will operate on modified schedules during the holiday season. Check facility pages for Winter Break drop-in schedules.
• The City of Ottawa’s Spay and Neuter Clinic will be closed from Dec. 22 to Jan. 2
• The City of Ottawa’s Archives and Gallery 112 at the James Bartleman Centre will be closed Dec. 22 until Jan. 5.
• The Shenkman Arts Centre will be closed on Jan. 1.
• Ben Franklin Place will be closed on New Year’s Day.
• The Barbara Ann Scott Gallery, City Hall Art Gallery and Karsh-Masson Gallery at City Hall will be closed Jan. 1.

Shopping

• Bayshore Shopping Centre: Closed New Year’s Day
• Billings Bridge Shopping Centre: Closed New Year’s Day
• Carlingwood Shopping Centre: Closed New Year’s Day
• Place d’Orléans: Closed New Year’s Day
• Rideau Centre: Closed New Year’s Day.
• St. Laurent Centre: Closed New Year’s Day
• Tanger Outlets: Closed New Year’s Day

The Retail Business Holidays Act says retail businesses in Ontario must be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Grocery stores

• Loblaws on Rideau Street: Open New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Loblaws on Isabella Street: Open New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Metro Glebe on Bank Street: Open New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Metro on Rideau Street: Open New Year’s Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Whole Foods at Lansdowne: Open New Year’s Day from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• All Farm Boy locations in Ottawa will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Alcohol

The Beer Store says all locations will be closed on New Year’s Day.

Museums

• Canadian Museum of Nature will be closed on New Year’s Day. The museum will be open Dec. 19-23, Dec. 26-31 and Jan. 2-4.
• Canada Agriculture and Food Museum

• Canadian War Museum
• Canadian Museum of History
• National Gallery of Canada
• Ottawa Art Gallery will be closed Dec. 25 to Jan. 1
• The Diefenbunker will be closed Jan. 1.

Canada Post

There will be no mail delivery from Canada Post on New Year’s Day.

Post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to the hours of service of the host business, according to Canada Post.

Passport Office/Service Canada locations

All federal Passport office and Service Canada locations will be closed on New Year’s Day.
