Voters in Brockville, Ont. react to Liberal election win

The morning after the Liberal Party of Canada won a fourth mandate in Monday night’s federal election, some voters in Brockville, south of Ottawa, say they were hoping for a change.

The Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands-Rideau Lakes riding has been blue since 2004. Conservative MP Michael Barrett won with just over 50 per-cent of the vote Monday night, maintaining the seat in the House of Commons that he’s held since 2018.

In Brockville, the largest municipality in the riding with a population over 20,000, some voters say they are disappointed with the results across the country, as their MP will once again be representing the opposition.

Resident Angie McKenzie says she was hoping for change when she cast her ballot.

“Extremely disappointed,” she says. “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

McKenzie voted Liberal in the last few federal elections, but felt it was time to change it up.

“We needed change; we really did,” says McKenzie.

Brockville holds a unique geographical location in Canada, with the St. Lawrence River separating the city from the United States.

Trade tensions with U.S President Donald Trump were a key point for both the Liberal and Conservative campaigns.

Manufacturing companies based in Brockville are thankful the election is over, hoping for more stability.

Canarm Ltd., an HVAC manufacturer that exports half of its products to the U.S., has been dealing with the uncertainty of Trump’s tariffs for months.

“We’re dealing with tariffs every day,” says CEO Jim Cooper. “We live from one news conference to the next.”

Cooper says maintaining strong relationships with their American customers has been difficult, but the election was a key date circled on the calendar.

Both the company and customers are hopeful for some kind of resolution under Carney’s leadership.

“I’m not confident until we get stability. There is no stability at all,” explains Cooper.

“The customers are saying the same thing to me. Just give us stability, give us what the landscape is, give us the rules of play, and we can adjust our businesses accordingly.”

Carney and Trump spoke over the phone Tuesday. Trump congratulated Carney on his victory, and the two agreed to meet in person in the near future.
