S&P/TSX composite edges higher in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index edged higher in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the industrial and utility sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 13.91 points at 33,969.02.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 54.87 points at 49,435.16. The S&P 500 index was up 5.77 points at 7,143.67, while the Nasdaq composite was up 7.30 points at 24,664.87.

The Canadian dollar traded for 73.10 cents US compared with 73.20 cents US on Wednesday.

The June crude oil contract was up 71 cents US at US$93.67 per barrel.

The June gold contract was down US$6.80 at US$4,746.20 an ounce.
