As cold temperatures continue to grip the capital, some say they’ve had enough of the cold and snow, while others are layering up and making the most of the season. “You’re only a week beyond what we call the dead of winter, the halfway point,” David Phillips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada, told CTV News Ottawa. “So, there’s still a lot of winter to go. I think that typically what you see in February, March and April, about 48 per cent of your annual snowfall, is yet to come.” According to Phillips, Ottawa has received 169 centimetres of snow this season and residents shouldn’t expect any relief from Winter just yet. “No, I don’t think there is,” he said. “Maybe from the snow a bit, but certainly not from the cold.” On Wednesday morning, many were making the most of the sunny day hitting the cross-country ski trails at Gatineau Park. “It was great. Especially with the sun shining. It’s lovely,” said Margaret Kenney. “This is one of the best winters we’ve had for a long time.” People were also out braving the cold on the Rideau Canal Skateway. “It’s a nice way to be outside,” said Jill, who was out for a skate with her son. While many do embrace the season, what’s fun for some isn’t for others “It’s the cold, I don’t mind the snow,” Jan Bellinger tells CTV News Ottawa. Freezing temperatures make waiting for a bus less than ideal. “It sucks. It’s not fun. These are times where you wish you had a car,” says Amanda while at a bus stop on Baseline Road. While parts of winter can be a pain, cross-country skier Kenney says the season can also be beautiful. “I mean, look at the trees. They’re just gorgeous. They’ve got the snow on them. It’s like a it’s like a postcard. We’re lucky. Right?” says Kenney.
