The opening weekend for the NCC’s Weekend Bikedays

The NCC Bike Days are back on in Ottawa, closing some roadways to vehicle traffic for active transportation on weekends. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

Starting this weekend, the National Capital Commission will close the parkways and Queen Elizabeth Driveway to vehicles for active use.

The NCC’s Weekend Bikedays will run from May 10 to October 13, on Saturdays, Sundays, and holiday Mondays.

Here is a look at what’s open for cyclists, runners, walkers, and other active use:

• Kichi Zībī Mīkan (Vimy Place to Carling Avenue): 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
• Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway (Aviation Parkway to St. Joseph Boulevard): 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Queens Elizabeth Driveway (Fifth Avenue to Somerset Street): 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the NCC, Weekend Bikedays are an opportunity to experience the beauty of the National Capital Region in a fun, safe, and environmentally friendly way.

This year’s schedule does not include a summertime period where part of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway will be reserved for active use seven days a week.

Last year, a shorter section of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway was reserved for active users 24 hours a day in July and August.
