Slippery roads lead to pileups on Hwy. 417 Friday morning

Police and paramedics in the capital are reminding drivers to slow down, leave space, and drive to conditions after several reports of collisions Friday morning.

There was light blowing snow and below-zero temperatures as drivers were commuting.

Ottawa OPP Const. Michael Fathi told CTV News Ottawa officers on the highway responded to more than a dozen collisions, including a four-car pileup and a six-car pileup.

Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps told CTV News Ottawa paramedics have been responding to collisions, but so far no serious injuries have been reported.

Ottawa police said they responded to six collisions between 7:20 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Drivers are urged to watch out for black ice.

“Black ice can form quickly and without warning — especially overnight and during early morning commutes,” police said on social media. “Please slow down, leave extra space, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns. Let’s all get where we’re going safely this winter.”
