Scottish Society of Ottawa bringing the streets of Edinburgh to the Glebe for Hogmanay

The Scottish Society of Ottawa is bringing the streets of Edinburgh to the Glebe this New Year’s Eve for its annual Hogmanay celebration.

The event takes place Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Hall on Fourth Avenue.

Ken Bartlett, Hogmanay director at the Scottish Society of Ottawa, tells CTV Your Morning Ottawa it’s a great party for all ages.

“We’re doing a version of Hogmanay from Scotland in the heart of the Glebe, a small, cozy venue, and we’ll be bringing the streets of Edinburgh to the Glebe venue and it’s going to be a great time,” he said. “If you’ve ever been to Edinburgh during Hogmanay, there are food trucks lining the streets outside of the pubs, so as you bounce from pub to pub, you can grab food, and we’re actually bringing a food truck into the little hall that we’re in.”

The food truck will be serving haggis and other Scottish favourites at “reasonable prices, because Scots like to count their pennies,” said Bartlett.

The night will also feature music from three high-energy acts, including fiddler Anna Ludlow and Glengarry’s Bang on the Ear. The night will open with a band called Celtic Folk Night.

And you’ll be able to ring in the new year twice.

“We’re actually doing two balloon drops that evening, 7 o’clock, which celebrates the Scottish new year, and midnight, of course, for Ottawa,” said Bartlett.

Kids, especially, enjoy the 7 p.m. balloon drop.

“The kids’ zone is great because the kids wait for the balloon drop at 7 o’clock and then they’re all stomping around, breaking the balloons. That’s the highlight of their night, I think. Then, of course, later in the evening is the adults’ version of that.”

Tickets are $85. Kids 12 and under get in free but require a “Twelve and under” ticket, the Scottish Society of Ottawa says. The food truck will take debit or credit only.
