The RCMP says it is increasing security measures around the U.S. and Israeli embassies in Ottawa following a shooting at the U.S. consulate in Toronto on Tuesday. Shots were fired at the consulate building on University Avenue at around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Toronto police are still searching for the suspects. The shooting is being considered a “national security incident.” In a statement to CTV News Ottawa, the RCMP said it is working closely with Toronto police and international partners on the investigation and is stepping up efforts in Ottawa as well. “While we are in the early stages of the investigation, we have increased security measures for U.S. and Israeli embassies and consulate buildings in Toronto, and in the Ottawa region,” an email said. “The RCMP takes threats to the security of individuals living in Canada very seriously and wants to reassure everyone that there is no indication of an immediate threat to public safety at this time.” A spokesperson for the U.S. embassy in Ottawa declined to comment, saying they do not speak publicly about security measures. The RCMP says anyone who sees something suspicious or who feels threatened online or in person, should report these incidents to their local police. If someone in the public is in immediate danger, they should call 9-1-1 or contact their local police.
