Neighbourhood music enthusiasts in Ottawa’s rural south end were performing right from their front porch, driveways and yards for a free concert on Saturday. The Osgoode PorchFest, held annually since the pandemic, featured more than 60 local artists, musicians and dance performers. “It started off as just a means of neighbors helping out each other during Covid. It was when we were all having to be socially distant,” said resident Ashley Koning, who’s husband is a musician. “Then it grew so popular. We reached out to other musician friends in the town, and we came up with the first porch festival.” The event has since grown every year with 23 porches currently filled with live music, a block party, food, beer garden and fun. Koning says Osgoode really took to the event, which brought back a sense of community during the pandemic, especially after such a distant time. “It’s really great. It’s something really nice because it’s in our community, so close to home. Nice to walk around town and see everybody,” said Osgoode resident Sarah Seymour. “We come every year. It’s great to have the family together,” said Angel Jenkins. The annual community event allows for all to groove and connect while enjoying a family-friendly experience. “We have fun. We came last year. It was our first time, but we made sure we came back this year. It’s always a good time,” said Jason Maher, attending PorchFest from Manotick. Organizers say PorchFest allows musicians of all genres to showcase their talent in a laid-back environment. “This is an awesome community event,” said Chris Davis, one of the PorchFest hosts. The musical festival was free with local talents donating their time and skills, but were also welcoming tips.
