The Ottawa Senators reached a deal with defenceman Jordan Spence on a four-year contract extension and traded for two new players on Friday. The team says the deal carries a $5 million average annual value through the 2029-30 season. Spence, 25, played 73 regular season games and four playoff games with the Senators in 2025-26. He scored seven goals and 24 assists in the regular season. “Jordan was an excellent addition to our hockey club and proved to be a valuable asset on our blue line and stepped up when it counted last season,” said Senators general manager and president of hockey operations Steve Staios in a news release. “We’re excited to have him as part of our core group.” Spence previously played four seasons with the L.A. Kings and was acquired by the Senators last year for a third-round pick (No. 67) in the 2025 NHL Draft and a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Senators acquire Ersson and Burakovsky The Senators announced another pair of transactions on Friday afternoon, acquiring two players in exchange for picks in next year’s draft. The organization acquired goaltender Samuel Ersson from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. The 26-year-old Swedish netminder spent four seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers before being acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs on June 16. Last season, Ersson appeared in 33 games, posting a 0.870 save percentage and 3.12 goals against on average. The Senators also landed forward Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. The 31-year-old winger has taken the ice for the Blackhawks, the Seattle Kraken, the Colorado Avalanche and the Washington Capitals. He’s also a two-time Stanley Cup winner, having hoisted the trophy with the Capitals in 2018 and the Avalanche in 2022. “Andre adds skill and playmaking ability to our forward group,” Staios said in a statement. “We are happy to add the pedigree of a two-time Stanley Cup champion.” Last season while playing for the Blackhawks, Burakovsky scored 11 goals and added 22 assists in 75 games.
