Ottawa firefighters rescued a man from the 11th floor of a Vanier high-rise on Saturday afternoon. The Ottawa Fire Services say they responded to a residential building on Lacasse Avenue, south of Montreal Road, after a monitoring agency reported several alarms inside at 4 p.m. Firefighters found a haze on the 11th floor and brought in additional resources to the scene. A hose line had to be advanced into the structure to battle the fire, firefighters say. After a search of an apartment unit, a man in his 60s was rescued from the fire, according to paramedics. Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson Tyler Leslie tells CTV News Ottawa that the man was treated at the scene and transported to hospital by ambulance with mild smoke inhalation. Leslie says it appears the man remained in the apartment unit after a kitchen appliance he was using caught fire. The fire was contained to the unit, he says. The fire was declared under control about 25 minutes after the initial reports. Firefighters say Ottawa Victim Services was called in to assist any displaced residents. Residents of the building were allowed to return inside after the air quality was determined to be safe. An investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
