OPP seek suspect after counterfeit cash used during online sale in Kemptville, Ont.

Ontario Provincial Police are warning people who arrange sales online to be wary of counterfeit cash.

Grenville OPP said a teenager selling an e-bike online met with a potential buyer in Kemptville on Friday. The man purchased the bike and took it away, only for the seller to realize afterwards the buyer had used counterfeit money.

Police released a photo of the suspect and a vehicle. If you recognize either, you’re asked to call Grenville County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

“This is a reminder to use caution when buying or selling online. Meet in a public place, bring someone with you, and take time to check any cash before completing the sale,” the OPP said in a post on X.

“Be wary of anyone who rushes the transaction. If something feels off, trust your instincts and walk away.”

Last week, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) also issued a warning about reports of counterfeit cash being used after meeting buyers online.

“OPS has seen an increase in counterfeit cash being used in Kijiji and Marketplace transactions. Scammers are purchasing high-value items like iPhones and computers using fake bills,” police said. “Please stay alert when buying or selling items in person.”
