Ont. woman convicted of animal cruelty banned from owning pets, but can keep dog

DESERONTO, Ont. -- A Deseronto, Ont., woman found guilty of animal cruelty has been sentenced to a lifetime ban on owning animals, except for one dog.

The Ontario SPCA says it was notified on Dec. 3, 2015, that a resident in the town, 30 kilometres east of Belleville, Ont., wanted to surrender five cats and two dogs.

Officials found the dogs were very thin and were housed in a garage, without food or water, and the garage floor was covered in feces and urine.

The five cats were discovered in a shed, with no food or water, with four of them in poor body condition, and the fifth was found dead in a cage.

Lori Brant, 57, pleaded guilty in Napanee, Ont., last week to failing to provide care necessary for general welfare and the OSPCA will check on the welfare of the dog twice a year.

The pets surrendered into the care of the animal welfare organization were rehabilitated, and have been put into new homes.
