A 44-year-old man is facing charges after a sexual assault in the Lowertown area over the weekend. Ottawa police say an officer was flagged down about a disturbance near the 400 block of Rideau Street at approximately 8 a.m. Sunday. “The officer met with an adult female who reported that she had been approached from behind by an unknown man while walking. The suspect allegedly sexually assaulted her and attempted to expose himself,” Ottawa police said in a news release on Wednesday. The officer located the suspect nearby and arrested him without incident. Nasir Abdi Suldaan is charged with one count of sexual assault and breach of probation. The charges have not been proven in court. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 18. Ottawa police are investigating more than 10 reported sexual assaults since June, including some involving strangers. Police previously offered several suggestions for safety precautions, including using well-lit and populated locations when walking, letting someone know your anticipated route and arrival time, and contacting police when a person or situation causes concerns.
