Campers in the National Capital Region have another option to make summer-time memories, as the Philippe Lake Campground is set to re-open after three years of rehabilitation works. According to the National Capital Commission (NCC), the campground in Gatineau Park will reopen to visitors on Friday. “Visitors can enjoy upgraded sites and enhanced services while rediscovering the friendly, natural atmosphere that has made this destination a favourite for generations,” the NCC said. On Thursday, media got a preview of the campground and facilities. “It’s such a key part of Gatineau Park,” Tobi Nussbaum, the CEO of the NCC, told CTV News Ottawa. “It plays such an important role in offering an opportunity for people to connect with nature, to go camping close to home or for people further afield.” According to the NCC, this is the “first significant rehabilitation since the 1950s.” The campground has upgraded infrastructure, including electricity and drinking water, “while revitalizing existing facilities and building new ones.” What’s new? There is a four-season indoor pavilion, camp store, a kitchen shelter, and an amphitheatre with views of the lake. Camping in a tent not for you? Part of the improvements include ten new “mini chalets,” including one that is universally accessible. “If you’re looking for something a little bit more comfortable, this is a great option,” says Calina Ellwand, manager of public programs and communications for the NCC. “There are beds with mattresses. You’ve got a queen bed as well as a bunk bed, and you’ve also got a fridge, cooking implements, indoor picnic table, nice little sofa.”
