Fewer road trips from eastern Ontario to New York State in January

There were approximately 18,000 fewer vehicle trips across the Canada-U.S. border from eastern Ontario to New York State in January, the 12^th straight month with a decline in cross-border trips.

Statistics from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection show there were 111,000 conveyances at the U.S. border locations at Alexandria Bay, Ogdensburg and Massena in January, down from 129,000 trips in January 2025 and 126,000 trips in 2024.

The three U.S. border crossings in western New York State connecting with eastern Ontario have seen a drop in border crossings since February 2025. There were 22,000 fewer trips across the border from eastern Ontario to New York State in December, 28,000 fewer trips in November and 27,000 fewer trips in October.

The data shows the Thousand Islands Bridge, connecting Alexandria Bay, New York and Lansdowne, Ont. continues to see the largest drop in cross-border trips. There were 33,500 conveyances at the Alexandria Bay, New York border crossing in January, down from 43,300 conveyances in January 2025. In December, there were more than 12,000 fewer trips across the border from Lansdowne to Alexandria Bay.

There were 14,300 conveyances at the Ogdensburg, New York border crossing across the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge in January, down from 19,500 conveyances in January 2025. There were 5,800 fewer border crossings at Ogdensburg in December and 7,900 fewer conveyances in November.

At the land border crossings from Cornwall and Akwesasne to Massena, New York, there were 63,000 conveyances at the Massena border crossing in January, down from 66,500 crossings in January 2025. There were 3,700 fewer trips across the border from eastern Ontario to Massena, New York in December compared to December 2024.

There have been fewer trips across the Canada-U.S. border from eastern Ontario to New York State every month since February 2025 amid the tariff war between Canada and the United States and the low Canadian dollar.
