Treaty 3 police, OPP seize $14K in drugs, arrest 2 in northern Ont.

A four-month investigation into drug trafficking in Treaty 3 communities has led to a significant seizure and two arrests, police say.

The Treaty Three Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police units based in Kenora conducted a proactive traffic stop on May 16, resulting in the seizure of 144 grams of suspected cocaine, $100 in cash, a cellphone, a 2022 Jeep Compass, and other drug trafficking paraphernalia.

“The estimated street value of the seized drugs is $14,400,” police said in a news release.

Two face multiple charges

As a result of the investigation, A 41-year-old woman from Grassy Narrows and a 37-year-old man from Winnipeg face multiple charges under Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Both accused were released and are set to appear in court at a later date.

“This operation underscores our commitment to combatting drug trafficking and protecting our communities from the harmful effects of illicit substances,” said Jeff Duggen, Superintendent of the Treaty Three Police Service.

The Treaty Three Police Service is a self-administered force under the First Nations Policing Program, providing full policing services within Treaty 3 territory.

The police service urged the public to report drug-related activity, stating in the release, “The Treaty Three Police Service continues to encourage anyone with information regarding drug-related activities to contact authorities or Crime Stoppers.”
