A commercial truck driver from Saskatoon is facing multiple charges -- including impaired driving and having open liquor in the vehicle -- following a motor vehicle collision in late September. The incident took place around 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 when the Nipigon detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a collision in a parking lot of a gas station and coffee shop in Nipigon. “The driver of the commercial motor vehicle, a white Freightliner, had struck a pole as well as another commercial motor vehicle, also a white Freightliner, parked in the parking lot,” the OPP said in a news release Oct. 1. Crash caused minor injuries “The driver showed signs of impairment and was subsequently arrested for impaired operation and transported to the detachment for further testing.” The 58-year-old driver from Saskatoon, Sask., was charged with driving while impaired by alcohol and drugs and driving with a blood-alcohol concentration above the legal limit. He was also charged with driving with open liquor in the vehicle. “Minor injuries were reported,” the OPP said. In addition to the charges, the driver’s licence was automatically suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for a week. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Nipigon on a later date. Anyone who sees an impaired driver is encouraged to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or 911.
