A man is dead and seven other people are injured after three separate crashes in Winnipeg on Monday, police say. The Winnipeg Police Service says one of the collisions, at Portage Avenue and Main Street, blocked traffic between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Police say a man in his 70s was taken to hospital in critical condition after his vehicle mounted a curb and struck a pole. The driver was pronounced dead in hospital. The collision was not deemed criminal in nature. Then, just after 4:30 p.m., three pedestrians were struck during a two-vehicle collision at Pembina Highway and Plaza Drive, police say. Five people were taken to hospital. Police say a Ford Fusion was travelling northbound on Pembina through the Plaza Drive intersection on a green light when it was hit by a westbound Honda Fit that failed to stop for a red light. The Honda mounted the sidewalk and struck three young children who were with an adult. The children were taken to hospital in stable condition with minor injuries, police say. The Honda’s driver, a woman in her 70s, and the passenger, a man in his 80s, were taken to hospital in unstable condition. Police say both have since been upgraded to stable condition. The Honda’s driver was issued a ticket under the Highway Traffic Act. At 5 p.m., officers also responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 800 block of Sterling Lyon Parkway. Police say a vehicle travelling eastbound struck a westbound vehicle that was turning in front of it. The westbound vehicle then hit a light standard, crushing its roof. Two people were taken to hospital in critical condition and were later upgraded to stable condition. Police say traffic lights at the intersection were affected for several hours.
