Suspect in Sault stabbing murder returns to court Jan. 11

Murder charges laid in Sault stabbing attacks A Toronto man has been charged with murder and other charges following two stabbing attacks in the city last week.

The suspect charged with murder in connection with a stabbing death in September appeared in court Thursday.

Steven Jones is charged in connection with the death of 22-year-old Taylor Marshall, whose body was found Sept. 7 in a multi-unit residential building on John Street.

Marshall’s death and a second stabbing were victims of random acts of violence, Sault Police said at the time.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Silver said Thursday that the defence is still receiving disclosure from the Crown, which is delaying the judicial pre-trial hearing.

Jones will have another court appearance Jan. 11, where the goal will be to set a date for the judicial pre-trial.

In the meantime, there will be ongoing discussions with defence and Crown to move the case forward.

The concern is the deadline to bring the case to trial under the Jordan principle, which requires the trial to begin within 30 months of charges being laid, minus delays caused by the defence and by extraordinary factors such as a global pandemic.
