Suspect charged with attempted murder in stabbing of Manitoulin police officer

A 20-year-old man from Wiikwemkoong has been charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of a tribal police officer in the community.

One person has been charged with attempted murder after a Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service officer was seriously injured in a knife attack Monday.

The incident took place early in the morning on Andrew Crescent in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory. Ontario Provincial Police responded around 5 a.m. to a request for assistance police in Wiikwemkoong “regarding a knife-related incident.”

During the incident, a tribal officer sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital by Ornge.

As a result of the investigation, a 20-year-old man from Wiikwemkoong has been charged with attempted murder.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on July 30.

In an update Tuesday, Wikwemikong Tribal Police said their officer is recovering in hospital.

“WTPS would like to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone in the community for the overwhelming support, care and kindness shown,” police said in a social media post.

“We’re relieved to share that our officer is on the road to recovery, and your compassion has played a big part in lifting spirits and strengthening resolve … We are proud to serve such a caring and united community.”

The Manitoulin OPP crime unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch.
