Montreal and the surrounding region were placed under a short severe thunderstorm warning on Thursday night. The warning ended shortly after 9 p.m. for most regions but a “watch” remained for Montreal. The Montreal alert ended just before 10 p.m. As the sun set, tens of thousands of Quebec residents lost power. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued the warning for most of southwestern Quebec, including Laval, Longueuil, and Vaudreuil. A later warning said that the thunderstorms had moved out of the area for Chateauguay, Longueuil and Laval. Power outages At 8:30 p.m., there were over 135,000 Hydro-Quebec clients without power across the province. The Laurentians were the hardest hit, with over 51,000 in the dark. Lanaudiere was next hardest with just over 26,000 out. Montreal (over 20,000), Laval (over 15,000) and Monteregie (over 11,000) were also hard hit.
