Sudbury woman charged in fatal Maley Drive crash

Police in Greater Sudbury say they have charged a suspect in a hit-and-run case on Maley Drive that killed a woman early Wednesday morning.

Sudbury police have charged a 23-year-old woman in connection with a fatal collision Wednesday morning on Maley Drive, near the Notre Dame Avenue exit.

The victim was a 37-year-old woman from Greater Sudbury, police said in a news release Thursday morning.

“Yesterday afternoon … officers arrested and charged the 23-year-old woman believed to be responsible for the collision,” police said.

Driving an unsafe vehicle

She has been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, driving an unsafe vehicle and not having a clear view to the front of a vehicle.

Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said the charge for driving an unsafe vehicle “is in relation to the damage caused to the vehicle as a result of the collision and the driver continuing to drive the vehicle with the damage.”

She was released on an undertaking with a court date of Jan. 14.

The 37-year-old woman was the second pedestrian killed in a collision Wednesday. A 39-year-old woman was killed in a crash at the corner of Attlee Avenue and Lasalle Boulevard around 4:30 a.m.

The driver in that case stayed at the scene and no charges have been announced by police.

“It has been determined that the driver was not at fault and that speed, drugs or alcohol were not factors in the collision,” police said Thursday.

“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with those impacted by the collision.”
