Greater Sudbury police warn of snow removal scams: fraudsters demand upfront payments online and then never show up.

Fraudsters are taking advantage of the record snowfall this week in Greater Sudbury, police said Friday, warning residents of snow removal scams that have been circulating in the city.

“After this week’s significant snowfall, many residents are looking for help clearing driveways and walkways,” police said on social media.

“We’ve received reports of individuals offering snow‑removal services online, requesting partial payment upfront and then never showing up to do the work.”

Police are urging residents to be cautious of unsolicited snow removal offers and to avoid paying up front in cases when you don’t personally know the person or business offering to do the work.

“Legitimate contractors usually accept payment after the job is done or have clear, verifiable business practices,” police said.

“Do your research. Check reviews, ask for references, and look for established local businesses with a proven track record.”

Getting a written agreement is also a good idea, outlining costs and when the work will be done.

“If the offer seems too good to be true or you feel pressured to pay quickly, walk away,” police said.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or victimized by a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and report it to Sudbury police at 705-675-9171 or online.
