Sudbury police say suspects responsible for dozens of shoplifting incidents

Three people in Greater Sudbury remain in custody after being arrested earlier this month in connection with numerous cases of shoplifting in the city.

The first arrests took place Oct. 16, when patrol officers spotted two people who were in breach of their release conditions in the area of Cambrian Heights Drive.

“The two individuals were taken into custody without incident,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“While in custody, officers determined that the two individuals were responsible for at least 20 shoplifting incidents on Notre Dame Avenue over the last three weeks.”

Remain in custody

A 29-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman have been charged with theft under $5,000 for each incident and appeared in court Oct. 17 and were remanded into custody.

Then on Oct. 18, officers conducting a bike patrol on Cedar Street spotted a suspect wanted for several shoplifting cases.

“The individual is believed to have stolen over $18,000 worth of merchandise from a store on the Kingsway between April and September 2025,” police said.

“The individual was taken into custody without incident.”

The 40-year-old woman was also wanted on a bench warrant issued Sept. 24 for theft and possession of property obtained by crime. She appeared in court Oct. 18 and was remanded into custody.

“Shoplifting continues to have a significant impact on local businesses and community safety,” police said.

“Beyond the immediate financial losses, these crimes increase costs for consumers, strain resources for business owners, and create an environment that undermines trust and security.”
