Sudbury Five hit 22 threes in 141-127 win over Lake Erie Jackals

The Sudbury Five put on a long-range shooting clinic Saturday night, draining 22 three-pointers in a 141-127 victory over the Lake Erie Jackals before an estimated 2,123 fans at the Sudbury Community Arena.

Charlie Marquardt caught fire from beyond the arc, connecting on 10 of 16 attempts from three-point range and finishing with a game-high 39 points for the Five. Duane Notice stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points and 14 assists.

“Now that was a Sudbury Saturday night,” the team posted on social media following the victory.

The victory improved Sudbury’s record to 15-6, tying the Five with the KW Titans for first place in the Basketball Super League standings.

Marquardt was the catalyst throughout, scoring from everywhere on the floor. His 10 three-pointers came as part of a 12-for-23 shooting night overall.

Notice controlled the tempo for the home side, dishing out 14 assists while also grabbing two rebounds and collecting a steal. Antonio Davis Jr. added 12 points and eight rebounds in the win, while Alex Kotov contributed 16 points and eight boards.

The Five shot 48.9 per cent from three-point range as a team and 47.1 per cent overall from the field.

Jackals battle through final frames

Lake Erie, now 3-18 on the season, was led by Fred Mulbah’s 28 points off the bench. Joshua Dominguez added 27 points and eight rebounds for the visitors, while Dane Miller pulled down an astounding 20 rebounds to go along with 22 points and six assists.

The Jackals stayed competitive throughout the second half, scoring 41 points in the fourth quarter, but could never fully close the gap against Sudbury’s hot shooting.

Bench adds to Five’s victory

Nervens Demosthene provided a significant spark off the bench for the Five, scoring 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Michael Okafor also contributed 14 points in a reserve role.

Guan Ziyu added 10 points for Sudbury before fouling out late in the contest.

The game featured plenty of physical play, with both teams combining for 57 total fouls.

Saturday’s contest was hosted by Pure Country 91.7 and featured the Five wearing their Road Monster alternate jerseys. Fans in attendance received glow sticks and bandanas as part of the night’s promotion.

The Five now turn their attention to a crucial showdown with the KW Titans on Thursday night in Kitchener. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in a game that will have significant implications for the Basketball Super League standings.
