Greater Sudbury Fire Services responded to a structure fire in a semi-detached home on Balsam Street at Peter Street late Thursday afternoon. Fire officials told CTV News the call came in from a person performing renovations inside the residence where the fire originated. Fire crews said upon arrival, they observed heavy smoke emanating from the attic area of one of the units and subsequently evacuated the adjoining home. No injuries, significant damage reported Greater Sudbury Fire Chief Rob Grimwood said no injuries were reported in the incident. He noted that firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within about 40 minutes by attacking the fire from both the interior and exterior of the structure. Grimwood added that the building sustained significant damage as a result of the fire. Separate watermain break under repair At approximately the same time, a watermain break occurred in the vicinity of Balsam and Nickel Street, a short distance from the fire scene. Grimwood said the watermain break appeared to be coincidental and unrelated to the firefighting operations. He added that the broken watermain did not affect crews’ ability to extinguish the blaze. Local residents said crews working on the watermain have advised that repairs could take some time to complete. The number of homes affected by the watermain break remains unknown at this time. CTV News has contacted the city for additional information regarding the watermain break but had not received a response as of the time this publication.
