State of emergency declared in Kashechewan

The chief of Kashechewan First Nation says that evacuations are beginning in the community as fears of major flooding grow.

Kashechewan First Nation has officially declared a state of emergency.

In a statement Sunday, Chief Hosea Wesley said a precautionary evacuation for the vulnerable populations will start today.

“Arrangements are currently underway to support our vulnerable populations, who will begin to be addressed starting Monday,” the statement said.

Timmins hosting 250 evacuees

“Evacuation flights are being prepared, and we can confirm that Timmins, Ont., will be hosting 250 evacuees.”

More details, including departure times and other host communities, will be released “as soon as they are confirmed,” Wesley said.

The First Nation often floods in the spring, forcing residents to relocate temporarily until the issue subsides.
