Shelter-in-place ends with arrests in Kapuskasing

A shelter-in-place was in effect for King Street and Bowman Avenue in Kapuskasing, where police were responding to an active incident in the area.

A shelter-in-place order ended Thursday afternoon for the area of King Street and Bowman Avenue in Kapuskasing where police had been responding to an active incident.

The order had been in place since 11 p.m. Wednesday “following reports of a robbery and assault,” Ontario Provincial Police said in an update Thursday.

“As part of the initial response, members of the public in the affected area were asked to follow shelter-in-place precautions. The situation was resolved safely, and the individuals involved are now in custody.”

Police said they won’t be releasing the names of those arrested “to protect the identity of the victim,” who received minor injuries.

All Catholic schools in the area were closed Thursday as a result of the incident, as was Kapuskasing District High School.

Police told CTV News on Thursday morning that they were dealing with a barricaded person incident and believe they now have the area contained.

“We recognize the significant emotional impact that receiving a shelter-in-place (order) can cause,” the OPP said.

“A police presence may remain in the area as the investigation continues. No further information will be released at this time.”
